Tony Hernandez Biography

Tony Hernandez is currently the Deputy Athletic Director for Business Operations. In this role, he oversees business operations, baseball, track and field, the equipment room, video services, Miami's Nike relationship, and legal/contractual matters.

Hernandez joined the University of Miami Athletic Department in February 1998 as a graduate assistant in Academic Services. He was hired full-time in 1999 as a Compliance Coordinator, subsequently being promoted to Director of Compliance in 2002, Assistant AD for Compliance in 2004, Associate AD for Compliance in 2005 and Senior Associate AD in 2007. In 2005, he also served as the Interim Associate AD for Development and has served as the Interim Associate AD for External Affairs on two separate occasions.

During his term as Interim Associate AD for Development, the Hurricane Club exceeded its annual giving budgetary goal by nearly 10 percent. Most recently, Hernandez was the Deputy AD and the Chief Operating Officer.

By request of President Donna Shalala, Hernandez served as Miami's Acting Athletic Director for almost two months, following Kirby Hocutt's departure to take the position of Director of Athletics at Texas Tech on Feb. 25, 2011.

In addition to his work at UM, Hernandez is also involved in various organizations. He is a Past President of the National Association of Athletic Compliance (NAAC) and works with the NCAA Amateurism Cabinet, Division 1-A Athletic Directors' Compliance Task Force and the ACC Finance Committee. He has previously served on the NCAA Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet, ACC Constitution and Bylaws Committee, and as Chair of the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Waivers Sub-Committee.

He is also an adjunct professor for Sports Law in the School of Education. Hernandez earned both a law degree and a bachelor's of business administration in finance from the University of Miami. He is a member of Iron Arrow, the highest honor attainable at UM, and served a term as president.

He is married to the former Melissa Schumacher and they have a 3-year-old son, Anthony Jr.
