CATEGORY 5 STUDENT GROUPS
Category 5 ("Cat 5") is the official Spirit Programming Board of the "U". It is a branch of Student Government that works directly with Hurricane Athletics and various student organizations to plan events on campus to promote our school traditions, spirit, and athletic programs. Cat 5's events range from pep rallies, away trips, meet and greets with players and coaches, tailgates, watch parties, and much more! Our executive board also operates the popular Hurricane Force program which rewards students for attending Miami Hurricanes athletic events. Category 5 manages the inflatable tunnel and helmet found on field at the beginning of every Miami Hurricanes football game along with assisting with the smoke. Storm Surge, the official Miami Basketball student section, is also produced and maintained by Category 5. In 2012, the organization won the Excellence in Programming and Most Spirited Organization SOAR awards. Category 5 meets every Monday night at 8 p.m. in UC237. For more information, visit our website at www.umcategory5.com.
ORGANIZATION OF THE WEEK
The Hurricanes Organization of the Week is designed to recognize a University of Miami student organization that exhibits exemplary spirit and support of Hurricanes Athletics.
The organization of the week will receive the opportunity to be recognized at a University of Miami football game. A selected number of organization members from the winning group each week will get to go on the field during a timeout and will be recognized on the video board and over the PA.
To become the Hurricanes Organization of the Week, student organizations will need to have the most students sign in at the marketing table for their organization at the designated UM Athletics event of the week. Students do not need to be organization members, but need to sign in for that organization.

The Canes Spirit Cup is a UM Athletics Residential Challenge between the six Residential Colleges on campus. Three sporting events are designated challenge events in the Fall (FB, VB, WSOC) and Spring (MBB, WBB, BSBL). The Residence College with the most points at the end of the competition will win the Canes Spirit Cup for that semester.
Attendance – students sign in at a designated table; points are awarded for most residents in attendance and highest percentage of students in attendance.
Competition – each residential college enters a student to participate in a pre-determined contest to take place at the sporting event; points are awarded based on the results of the competition.
Spirit – points are awarded at the discretion of marketing based on school spirit; points based on general UM spirit, noise, creativity, props, costumes at events.
Football – Punt, Pass, and Kick Competition; one male and one female from each Residential College. Contest takes place either pre-game or half-time of a UM Football game.
Soccer – Dribble & Shoot Obstacle Competition; two males and two females from each Residential College. Contest takes place at half-time of a UM Soccer game.
Volleyball – Skills Challenge & Relay Competition; two males and two females from each Residential College. Contest takes place at intermission of a UM Volleyball game.
Attendance – Points are awarded based on total attendance and percentage of residential college in attendance. 7, 5, 3, and 1 point are awarded for each category.
