CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Sometimes experience matters, and sometimes it doesn't. Today for the Miami Hurricanes' William Albanese, it did not as the freshman standout clinched the Hurricanes victory over Florida Gulf Coast University with a thrilling 6-2,4-6,6-3 victory. Miami won overall by a score of 6-1.

"William showed what kind of kid he is today," Head Coach Mario Rincon said following his team's victory. "Resilient, tough, he doesn't give up. He's a competitor. A winner. Even though he is a true freshman, I feel that he has had a great amount of experience in his time at Miami. He has already clinched 2 or 3 victories for us and we haven't even begun conference play." Albanese was charged with taking care of the number 6 singles spot, and he did just that with his win.

To start the match off, Miami scored an easy doubles win from the No. 2 doubles team Diego Soto and Gabriel Flores, who won 8-4 against Florida Gulf Coast's Michael Beiler and Tianyu Bao. That was followed by the No. 3 doubles team, Marco Stancati and Henrique Tsukamoto, dominating their match 8-1 against Dean Tsamas and Lance Lvovsky.

Omar Aly scored Miami's first single's win at the no. 4 spot with a quick 6-2,6-4 outpacing of his opponent, Jackson Moore. Flores followed up for the Canes by scoring a 7-5,6-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast's Tianyu Bao. At this point, Miami was up 3-0, one point away from clinching victory, but all of their remaining matches were very close.

Albanese ended the suspense with his win, which was followed up by victories from Wilfredo Gonzalez at the No. 3 singles spot, and Marco Stancati at the No. 5.

The Canes had a match earlier in the day, as they swept Georgetown University, 4-0. The afternoon match marked the first double header that Miami's men's tennis team has ever played.

"The athletic training staff at the University of Miami is a big reason why we were able to have the success that we did today," assistant head coach Mark Dickson said. "Our guys knew that some of them would have to rest in the morning match so we could put them out there in the afternoon. Everyone kept the team first concept in mind and we were able to stay focused and pick up two fantastic wins today."

The Canes will begin their ACC schedule with a home match this Friday, March 15th at 2 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Canes will be taking on the Clemson Tigers.
