CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami signee and American Heritage star Zack Collins was the sixth Hurricane selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Saturday.

Collins, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound power hitter and Pembroke Pines, Fla., native, was picked in the 27th round (No. 825 overall) by the Cincinnati Reds.

Collins, who played both catcher and first base during his time with the Patriots, was named a 2013 Rawlings First Team All-American.  As a junior, Collins belted a grand slam in the Class 5A state baseball championship finale, guiding the Patriots to their second state championship in program history. In his final year at Heritage, Collins hit .388 with five homeruns and 31 RBI.

Known for his outstanding bat and impressive power, Collins was ranked No. 110 in Perfect Game’s Top 500 pre-Draft prospect rankings and No. 113 by Baseball America. He joins fellow signees Matt McPhearson (fourth round, Arizona Diamondbacks), J.D. Underwood (fifth round, Los Angeles Dodgers), Willie Abreu (14th round, Cincinnati Reds), Derik Beauprez (25th round, Boston Red Sox).
