Coral Gables, Fla. - Head swimming coach Christie Shefchunas and the University of Miami swimming and diving team took part in a Habitat for Humanity community outreach program Saturday, Apr. 18, as they paired with members of the Hurricanes soccer team to build a house in the nearby Liberty City section of Miami.
Shefchunas, just finishing her third year at UM, teamed with members of the UM soccer team [under the direction of head coach Tricia Taliaferro] for this year's charity event.
Together, the Hurricanes paired with members of a professional construction crew and fellow volunteers to help build a home for a deserving family in the Miami-Dade community.
"I'm just so proud of the girls for giving up their Saturday to help someone in the community in need," stated Shefchunas. "It was a lot of hard work, and it was cool for me to see them come together and put the same kind of effort they do in practice into this house. They would get some of the roof up and look up and say ... Wow, this is so cool!"
The Hurricanes are always giving back to the community for which they have a fond love for, and a community that loves them back. UM is widely-respected and loved by the city of Miami, and Saturday's Habitat for Humanity program was just another in a long list of ways UM says "Thank You" back to that community that follows them so heavily.
"It was a very proud day for me to see them finding joy in helping others," added Shefchunas. "Life is all about loving your neighbors, and that's exactly what they did on Saturday!"
