Coral Gables, Fla. - The University of Miami volleyball team, along with the women's basketball and soccer teams, paired up to give back to the community Saturday, April 25, participating in the Habitat for Humanity Project in the Liberty City section of northwest Miami. They helped to build a home for a deserving family, a project that has stretched for two weeks with UM athletic teams helping throughout.

The event was comprised of UM women's athletics teams, as they helped to give back to the community that supports them so proudly. Also present on Saturday was Dr. Donna Shalala - President of the University of Miami, while Katie Meier (UM women's basketball head coach) and volleyball assistant coach Laura Kuhn assisted with the project as well.

They have been involved in aspects of the project from the ground up, so to speak, assisting in laying the foundation, stabling the foundation, and most recently roofing. Together, the Hurricanes paired with members of a professional construction crew and fellow volunteers to help build a home for a deserving family in the Miami-Dade community.

"The day was very rewarding in the sense that we were coming together as a UM family to help make a special family's dream of owning her own home come true," shared UM assistant volleyball coach Laura Kuhn. "It is always a very humbling experience when you volunteer in any aspect of giving back to the community. The group that worked together Saturday gained tons of respect for `roofers.' That is a thankless job. It was such a great experience!"

Miami worked tirelessly all day long on the project, helping to build the home. The Hurricanes took part in roofing the house for the majority of the day, as the swimming & diving and women's soccer team helped to build the foundation last weekend.

"It feels great to give back to someone in need," expressed Ali Becker, a freshman on the UM volleyball team. "As student-athletes, we are given a lot, and sometimes we take it for granted."

"It was a lot of fun being able to help out with something that will better somebody's future," added Christine Williamson, a volleyball redshirt-freshman. "It's always fun to do community service because you are able to help good people that have been working for something, and otherwise would not have it. It is also good being able to represent the University of Miami, and being an example for others to follow."
