The University of Miami has a long tradition of cheerleading since its founding in 1925. With five National Championships in football, and countless Bowl and NCAA Basketball Tournament appearances, the spirit program has been a vital part of the athletic program at UM.
The cheerleading program at Miami consists of two teams, the coed team with 15 members and the all-girl team which is made up of 15 females. The teams cheer on the sidelines at football games and men's and women's basketball games, as well as volleyball games. Cheerleaders may also travel to away football games and post-season play.
Sunsations Dance Team
The Sunsations are the official dance team of the Miami Hurricanes and serve as representatives for the University at various athletic and community events. The team consists of 15 talented dancers who perform on the sidelines at all home football and basketball games and are featured in timeouts as well as during half-time performances.
The Miami Hurricanes Cheerleaders and Sunsations are a major public relations arm of the University and participate in various athletic and University events and countless community service projects throughout the year. As ambassadors for the university, individuals are expected to exude a tremendous amount of enthusiasm, professionalism, and project the image of a collegiate athlete as they represent UM and its programs. As part of athletics, the Cheerleaders and Sunsations have access to tutors, trainers and medical staff, as well as a small book stipend is awarded to some members of the teams. Participants are required to be full-time students for both the fall and spring semesters.
