CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Welcome to the second installment of the 'Where Are They Now' women's golf series. We are tracking down former Hurricane golfers and chronicling their lives since leaving the University of Miami. Our next volunteer is UM alum Joye McAvoy-Sinn, who graciously answered a few questions.
Name: Joye McAvoy-Sinn
Years attended UM: 1985-89
Degree earned: BBA finance
Awards: 1988 All-American & Academic All-American (first UM golfer to receive both honors in the same year)
1. Where do you live now and what are you up to these days?
I live in Essex, Ontario, and I'm currently a CPGA Teaching Professional at the Silver Tee Golf Centre. I teach golfers of all ages and ability, and recently started coaching a few junior golfers who play competitively.
2. Soon after your career at UM, where did life take you?
After UM, I turned professional and joined the Canadian PGA. I played professionally in Canada and focused my career in the CPGA on becoming a golf teacher.
3. Do you still play golf competitively or just for fun?
I still play golf for fun, but at this time I do not play competitively.
4. What is your fondest memory about playing for the Hurricanes?
My fondest memory about playing for the Hurricanes is playing golf as a team. Golf, for the most part, is an individual sport; however, playing golf for UM was the only time when I played on a team and had the support from my teammates.
5. Do you still keep in touch with any of your former teammates?
No, I do not keep in touch with my teammates.
6. Do you have any children? How old and are they and what do they do?
I have three children. Zachary will be 11 years old in September, and my twins, Aaron and Katie, turned 9 in July. They all attend Essex Public School.
7. Do you keep up with the Canes football team on game days?
I have to admit, I do not keep up with the Canes football team on game days. In fact, I rarely watch TV unless it's a major golf tournament or the NHL Stanley Cup Finals.
8. What advice would you give the girls on the team today?
Finish your education and graduate with a degree, work hard to achieve your goals and have a positive attitude on and off the course.
