UM Volleyball Begins Preseason
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The University of Miami volleyball team officially reported to campus to begin the preseason on Tuesday. The team returns 10 letterwinners and four starters from last year, welcoming five newcomers to the fold.
"We are very excited to get started with preseason and working towards our goals," said head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch, who is entering her 12th season at the helm. "The team worked hard throughout the offseason and is ready to go. We look forward to getting out on the court and preparing for the season."
The Hurricanes are looking to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year, reaching the second round and posting a 26-5 overall record in 2011.
With classes at UM starting on Aug. 22, the team will have two weeks to focus exclusively on volleyball to prepare for the upcoming season. In addition to practice and strength and conditioning, the team has also scheduled time for activities to help develop team chemistry.
A highlight of the preseason will be the Alumni Match at the Knight Complex on Aug. 18, as players from past teams will return to Coral Gables to take part in a competitive scrimmage. Fans are invited to attend the event prior to heading to Canes Fest.
The Canes will officially open the season at home in the Hurricane Invitational on Friday, August 24. Teams scheduled to compete in the tournament that weekend include Wofford, Ole Miss, Rutgers and Samford.
