Hurricanes Traveling for Weekend Tournament
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- The Miami Hurricanes women's soccer team is back on the pitch and training for a weekend visit to West Virginia for the WVU 90 Minute Classic.
The four-team tournament, which also includes host WVU, No. 8 Penn State and BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh, will feature two match-ups for each invitee at the Dick Diesk Soccer Stadium. Miami, who will open tournament play at 5 p.m. Friday against Pitt, will battle the Mountaineers Sunday at noon.
"We've scheduled two really good teams," second-year head coach Tom Anagnost said. "Right now, we're focusing on ourselves, and how to become more on the same page both individually and collectively."
The Hurricanes (2-2-0) are looking to get back in the win column after a 1-0 overtime loss in overtime at the hands of No. 9 UCF. Before Sunday's loss, the Hurricanes used an effective early offensive surge in a 4-0 home-opening win over Morehead State on Aug. 24.
Through its first four matches last season, Miami had scored five goals and allowed four. Though their 2012 record currently stands at 2-2-0, the Hurricanes' improved totals include eight goals scored and only three allowed.
Seven different Hurricanes have tallied goals in the early going, including five players who have opened their accounts in Orange and Green: Ally Andreini, Jasmine Paterson, Jesse Shugg, Paige Lombard and Tina Romagnuolo. Coach Anagnost and his staff know they will need effective play from their newcomers if the team hopes to make a splash this weekend against two quality opponents.
"We're trying to get better at it, technically and tactically," Anagnost added. "I think as a whole team, we're really just focusing on consistency."
