Pezzulo and Arrington Highlight XC Opener
TAMPA, Fla. - Juniors Sean Pezzulo and Lindsi Arrington led the way for the University of Miami cross country teams as they opened the season on Friday at the USF Invitational. The men's team place fourth out of nine teams, while the women were sixth out of 10 squads.
"The course today was very wet and sloppy from the recent storms," assistant cross country coach Damon Griffiths said. "It allowed me to see who was ready to race in conditions that were difficult."
Pezzulo finished fourth in the field with a time of 26:58.23, while Arrington placed third with a mark of 18:57.28. The men ran an 8K and the women a 5K at the USF golf course in Tampa, Fla.
"Sean came into the fall focused and really put in the work this summer," Griffiths said. "Lindsi has also looked very good all fall. Today's performance is a good indicator for what she can do this season."
Overall, four Hurricanes placed in the top 25 in the men's race. Senior Greg Kaczka placed 15th with a time of 28:01.33, while sophomore JaCee Jarnagin finished at 28:16.57 (20th). In addition, junior Luke Fontaine clocked in with a time of 28:27.41 for a 23rd-place finish.
On the women's side, junior Alaine Tate followed Arrington with a time of 20:03.43 (11th place) in her first race a Cane.
"We have the first race under our belts, and have time to improve between now and our next meet," Griffiths concluded.
Next up, members of the Hurricanes will compete at the Greentree Invitational at Kendall Indian Hammocks Park on Saturday. The college races start at 7 and 7:30 a.m., the high school varsity follow at 8 and 8:30 a.m. and JV races follow afterwards.
