GREENSBORO, N.C. - University of Miami volleyball junior Alex Johnson has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The right side collected 16 kills and 16 digs in the Hurricanes' 3-1 upset win Friday over No. 6 Florida State.
Johnson is the first Hurricane to win ACC Player of the Week since Lane Carico on Nov. 28, 2011.
"Alex is such a steady player for us," head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. "She's very smart out on the court and finds ways to mix up her shots. Against Florida State, she came through with some big kills at critical moments in the match. This is a well-deserved honor for Alex."
A Preseason All-ACC selection, Johnson led all players with 16 kills in the contest, while committing just three errors for an efficient .342 hitting percentage. The Tallahassee, Fla., native added three total blocks in the victory.
On the season, Johnson, who has started every match in her career, has racked up 95 kills (3.17 k/s) for a .333 hitting percentage. Additionally, she has registered four double-doubles in eight matches with 86 total digs (2.87 d/s).
The 3-1 victory over the Seminoles marked the highest ranked opponent the Canes had ever defeated. The win, which came in front of a national television audience (ESPNU) and a record crowd at the Knight Sports Complex, improved Miami to 7-1 on the season and 1-0 in the ACC.
The Canes are just outside the latest AVCA Top 25 Poll and will next step out of conference this weekend to take part in the Louisville Tournament at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky. UM will face UNLV on Friday before going up against Middle Tennessee and No. 12 Louisville on Saturday.
The UM Ticket Office is pleased to offer season tickets for both volleyball and soccer for just $50. Season tickets to the home volleyball schedule at the Knight Complex can be purchased for $35, with single match tickets available for as low as $3. Call 1-800-GO-CANES to order your tickets today.
