Rowing Starts Strong at Head of the Hooch

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Miami rowing team opened the year on Saturday sending crews out to compete at the largest fall race in the country, the Head of the Hooch Regatta on the Tennessee River. Both the Championship 8+ and the Championship 4+ finished in medal-winning position with bronze and silver medals, respectively.

"The racing went very well for our crews on the first day of the regatta," head coach Andrew Carter said. "Having two medal performances out of the four entries was an excellent way to the get the 2012-13 season underway.

"Obviously the medals in both the Championship 8+ and Championship 4+ races are highlights for the day, but the results of our second 4+ entry and our Novice 8+ can't go unnoticed. It speaks to our improving depth and great effort from those crews."

The Canes started the day in the Championship 8+ event, going to the line against 29 crews from across the country. The Varsity rowed to a bronze-medal finish, only three seconds out of a silver over the five kilometer course.

Two crews went to the line for Miami in the Championship 4+ event. Tackling 34 other boats, the Canes' "A" entry rowed away with a silver medal while the "B" crew raced to a solid 13^th place finish.

Miami's novice team made their debut in a fantastic 50-crew field. In an interesting composite event, the entirely walk-on crew held their own against outstanding recruiting classes from southern and midwest regions, and finished the day in 23rd position.

The Hurricanes have one more event tomorrow, the Open 8+ category, with two boats set to race.

"We're looking forward to the challenge of the Open 8+'s tomorrow," Carter said. "The lineups will change somewhat and we'll have a sense of some new combinations."
