CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team wrapped up the fall season this weekend at the 2012 Dick Vitale Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic.
"We completed our fall tournament season on a very positive note,” said assistant coach Mark Dickson. “Henrique and Jack were able to compete hard against some very tough opponents. Jack and Henrique continued to impress me as they showed the character and sportsmanship that Coach [Mario] Rincon emphasizes each day.”
In the singles consolation quarterfinals, Henrique Tsukamoto defeated Matthew Samburg of FAU in three, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8), but was defeated, 7-6 (5), 6-3 by Princeton’s Dan Richardson in the semifinals at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club in Sarasota.
“Henrique had four close, challenging singles matches and these close matches are what will take him to the next level,” said Dickson. “He is learning when to be more patient and when to be more aggressive.”
Freshman Jack Murphy was defeated in his singles consolation quarterfinal match, 6-2, 6-2, by Andrew Mellow of Furman.
“I was especially proud of how many second and third effort points Jack was able to win this weekend,” added Dickson. “His will and mental toughness won him a lot of important points. Jack has made tremendous progress and will continue to improve.”
