BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Miami track and field program travels to Alabama this weekend to compete in the Auburn Invitational, which will be held at CrossPlex Indoor Track & Field Center.
"I think it's just going to be a great meet, just because of the quality of the teams that are going to be there," director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. "We'll see the difference with the SEC and ACC. Then TCU is coming from the Big 12 and UCF is coming from (Conference USA) so it's going to be a little bit higher level competition than we had at Kentucky."
The men's and women's teams will each compete in a total of 12 events, including sprints, hurdles, distance, relays, throws and jumps. Field events will open the meet Saturday at 9 a.m., while the running events kick off at 1 p.m.
Freshman thrower Isaiah Simmons will look to improve on his impressive collegiate track debut. Simmons, who finished second at last week's Kentucky Invitational, broke Vince Wilfork's nearly 12-year-old indoor shot put record with a throw of 17.87m.
The men will have two talented 4x400m teams competing at Auburn. The Canes' 4x400 team finished third last week at Kentucky.
Fresh off a second place finish in the long jump a week ago, junior All-American Samantha Williams will lead the women in both the long and triple jumps. Williams' jump of 5.94m bested her previous career indoor mark of 5.87m set at last year's ACC Indoor Championships.
Junior transfer Alaine Tate is one of several talented runners on the women's side. Tate, who finished second in the 800m in her Hurricane debut last week, will look to improve on her 2:10.60 time.
Constructed and opened in 2011, the Birmingham CrossPlex Indoor Track & Field Center is a world-class facility featuring an aquatic center with an Olympic-sized pool, and a state-of-the-art indoor track stadium. The track facility features a 200-meter hydraulically banked Mondo Super X track, eight-lane sprint track, and four-lane warm-up track. There is a double apparatus for all field events -- shot put, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, high jump.
