Former Miami defensive standout Kareem Brown is in his second season on the Hurricanes coaching staff and his first as the program’s outside linebackers coach.

Prior to his return to Coral Gables, Brown spent the 2012 season as a defensive line assistant at FIU.

During his time at FIU, Brown worked directly with defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and assisted the defensive staff in preparation for opponents. He signaled calls to the defensive line on gameday and worked with FIU’s defensive line coach in developing run game and pass rush schemes.

He spent five years in the NFL with three different teams.

He was selected in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. He spent the 2008 and 2009 seasons with the New York Jets and the 2010 and 2011 seasons with the Tennessee Titans.

Brown played football for Miami from 2002-05. In 2004, he was recognized as the team’s Most Improved Defensive Player. In 2005, he earned the Defensive Lineman of the Year.

As a senior in 2005, Brown tallied 60 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and a team-best 11.0 sacks, while also posting 16 QB hurries. As a junior in 2004, he made 39 tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks, while recovering two fumbles. He was a starter in the 2006 Under Armour Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

A Miami native, Brown was a four-year starter at Miami Norland Senior High School. He graduated from UM with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts in May 2006.
