Miami Track Ready for Hurricane Invitational
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - With the indoor season complete, the University of Miami track & field program kicks off its 2013 outdoor season with the Hurricane Invitational.
The meet, held at Cobb Stadium on the University of Miami campus, begins on Friday, March 15 at 9 a.m. with the decathlon, followed by a handful of running and field events. Running events will commence at 2 p.m. with the men's 3000m steeplechase and ends with the women's 5000m run at 7:20 p.m. Field events start at 1 p.m. with women's shot put.
Saturday's action kicks off at 9 a.m. with the decathlon. The men's 4x100m relay, starting at 1 p.m., is the first of 18 running events scheduled for Day 2 of the meet. Field events are also scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, beginning with the women's shot put, men's discus throw and men's long jump.
After a stellar indoor campaign, redshirt freshman Isaiah Simmons is poised for strong outdoor season. Simmons broke Vince Wilfork's nearly 12-year-old Miami record with a 17.87m throw in his first collegiate indoor meet. Simmons followed that up by breaking his own record the following week with a throw of 18.17m at the Auburn Invitational. Simmons, who capped off his impressive rookie season by winning the ACC Indoor Championship in men's shot put, will compete in the shot put, discus and hammer throw.
Phillip Dorsett will kick off his outdoor season by competing in the men's long jump and the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. The sophomore, who also plays wide receiver for the Hurricanes football team, was a standout during indoor season in the 60m, 200m, 400m and long jump.
Leading the women on the track this weekend are Alaine Tate and Alyssa McClure. Tate found success during indoor season, placing second in the ACC Indoor Championships in the 800m run and helping the 4x400 relay team finish third. The junior will represent the Canes in the 4x400m relay and the 400m run this weekend.
McClure, who will compete in the 100m and 200m runs this weekend, is coming off a strong performance at the ACC Indoor Championships, finishing third in the 60m and fifth in the 200m run.
Amber Monroe will lead Miami's women in the field events. The sophomore is slated to compete in the discus, hammer and shot put throws this weekend. During the indoor season, Monroe had several top-5 finishes in women's shot put and weight throw.
Cobb Stadium features a full size soccer playing field centered inside an eight-lane rubber track. In addition, a 500-seat stadium grandstand stands at midfield for optimal viewing.
