SKILLMAN, N.J. – The latest ITA rankings are out and the Hurricanes remain steady as the nation’s 10th-ranked team. This weekend’s conference opponents, North Carolina and Duke are ranked Nos. 1 and 9, respectively.
The women’s tennis team (15-3, 6-1 ACC) has won a season-high nine consecutive matches and will host the Tar Heels and the Blue Devils in their final two home matches of the regular season this weekend.
As has been the case the last few weeks, the Canes will be led by three ranked singles players, all of whom are freshmen.
Stephanie Wagner, a native of Amberg, Germany, has competed from the No. 1 position for the last five matches and has been victorious each time. She moved up 25 spots from No. 104 to 79 and her season record stands at 18-3.
Kelsey Laurente sits at No. 81, while Clementina Riobueno moved up one notch to No. 121. Riobueno has matched Wagner’s team-leading 18 singles victories.
Though head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews utilizes numerous variations for doubles play. Three combinations remained ranked. The team of Wagner and Lileikite come in at No. 39, while Laurente/Brittany Dubins are 77th and Riobueno/Melissa Bolivar round out at No. 79.
Friday’s match against the top-ranked North Carolina will begin at 5 p.m. at UM’s own Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Fans that attend will be treated to a free BBQ dinner from Brother Jimmy’s while it lasts. They will also have the opportunity to take their photo with the men’s basketball 2013 ACC Championship trophy at the main entrance.
