W. Tennis Advances to Semis with Win Over GT
CARY, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team, ranked No. 10 in the nation and a No. 4 seed in the ACC Championship, defeated 22nd ranked and fifth-seeded Georgia Tech, 4-1, Friday in a quarterfinal match at the Cary Tennis Center.
“The team played well in doubles today,” said Hurricanes head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. “In singles, we did a good job of closing matches in two sets.”

|No. 90 Kendal Woodard||6||6|
|No. 91 Kelsey Laurente||3||4|
|No. 57 Woodard/ Kurey||7||unf|
Freshman Stephanie Wagner, the Canes (18-5) top-ranked player at No. 60, clinched the victory. Her 6-3, 6-2 win over 94th ranked Elizabeth Kilborn sent the Canes the first of two Saturday semifinal matches. It was the 20th singles win of the spring season for the Amberg, Germany native.
Right before Wagner clinched the match, fellow freshman Clementina Riobueno earned her team-leading 21st win over the Yellow Jackets’ (14-9) Megan Kurey, 6-4, 6-1.
After Georgia Tech’s 90th-ranked Kendal Woodard tied the match at 1-1 with her 6-3, 6-4 win over Miami’s 91st-ranked Kelsey Laurente, UM sophomore Monique Albuquerque put the Canes up for good. The Brazil native earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Muriel Wacker.
Miami took the early lead after doubles wins from the Nos. 3 and 2 positions, respectively. Junior Brittany Dubins teamed with Wagner to trounce the GT duo of Wacker and Kilborn, 8-3. It was only the second time Dubins and Wagner have teamed up in doubles, proving victorious each time.
Laurente and Melissa Bolivar clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Natasha Prokhnevska and Jasmine Minor.
The match was clinched on Court 1 before Bolivar, who was just one point away from victory, could claim her 11th consecutive singles win.
“We need to keep going,” added Yaroshuk-Tews. “I feel we are playing well right now.”
The Hurricanes will face top-seeded North Carolina Friday in the conference semifinals. The match is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. The Tar Heels claimed a 4-0 win over eighth-seeded NC State in their quarterfinal match.
The two teams met earlier this month on April 12 in Coral Gables with the Tar Heels coming away with a 5-2 victory. Miami’s Riobueno and Bolivar each earned singles wins in the match.
