EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Miami Hurricanes women’s golf team shot a final-round 23-over 311 Sunday to finish seventh at the Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course.
Miami concluded the two-day tournament with a final score of 54-over (305-302-311=918), 10 strokes outside of the top five. Host Michigan State won the Mary Fossum Invitational by a four-stroke margin at 28-over 892. Ohio State finished second at 32-over 896, followed by Notre Dame at 42-over 906, Northwestern at 43-over 907 and Oregon at 44-over 908.
"The course was set up extremely difficult for the last two days," head coach Patti Rizzo said. "The pins were ridiculous today. It was a tough adjustement for us coming from Miami greens.
"I still feel confident that our team is very strong," Rizzo said. "We will be ready for our next event."Michigan State’s Liz Nagel claimed individual medalist honors, winning the Mary Fossum by three strokes.
Miami junior Leticia Ras-Anderica, who entered Sunday tied for fourth overall, shot a final-round 82 to finish the tournament tied for 17th at 12-over (74-72-82=228).
Freshman Daniela Darquea carded Miami’s low score of the final round with a 76. Darquea tied for 30th at 15-over (78-77-76=231). A trio of Hurricanes tied for 34th at 16-over 232 – Delfina Acosta, Rika Park and Kailey Walsh. Acosta and Park each shot a final-round 79, while Walsh carded the Canes’ second-lowest round Sunday with a 77.
The Miami Hurricanes will make back-to-back trips to Austin, Texas, beginning with the Challenge at Onion Creek, which will be played Sept. 29-Oct. 1.
