FT. MYERS, FLA. – Today marked day one for the University of Miami Hurricanes men’s tennis team at the FGCU Invitational.
In the first round of singles, all four Canes secured a victory. Veteran Gabriel Flores defeated his opponent, Renato Lombardi of Barry University, 6-4, 6-3. Taking note, junior Henrique Tsukamoto also won his match against Franco Echenuque of Barry, 6-3, 6-4.
Sophomores William Albanese and Jack Murphy kept the trend going with wins in their matches. Albanese defeated Matt Wagner of Boston College, 6-2, 6-4. Murphy shut his opponent out in the first set with a solid win of 6-0, 6-4, against Boston’s Christian McKean.
This afternoon, second round play continued with Hurricane dominance with newcomer Bernard Tefel defeating Chris Perrigan of FGCU, 6-3, 6-1. Tsukamoto and Albanese got their second wins over Lucas Vaz of FGCU (6-0, 3-6, 6-0) and Eduardo Alfonzo of Barry (6-2, 6-0), respectively.
Flores put up a good fight in his second round, but came up short against Tianyu Bao of FGCU, 6-4, 6-3. Murphy also stumbled in his second match, falling 7-5, 6-4 to FGCU’s Lance Lvovsky.
In the doubles qualifier, the duo of Tsukamoto and Tefel had a close match against Parlic and Thomason of Arkansas; they came up just shy with a final score of 9-7.
Play continues tomorrow for the Hurricanes at 9 a.m.
