ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. – Friday marked the first day of the University of Miami men's tennis team playing at the Jack Kramer Invitational.
Following a good showing in the singles bracket, the Canes finished the day on a strong note in the doubles Round of 16 with both UM teams moving on to the quarterfinals.
Omar Aly and Wilfredo Gonzalez defeated LMU’s Cristobal Rivera and Todd Volmari, 8-6 while Diego Soto and Gabriel Flores also won, downing Washinton’s Gal Hakak and Wendell Watanabe, 8-3.
After starting strong in his first singles set, No. 5 Wilfredo Gonzalez stumbled in his second set, but came back for a three-set win against Felix Van Kann of Loyola Marymount, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5, in the singles Round of 32. Senior Omar Aly followed suit winning his match with an upset of No. 8 Gal Hakak of Washington, 6-4, 6-3 and Diego Soto had a smooth win against his opponent Jonathan Poon of UC Irvine, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Gabriel Flores started the day off with a good fight, winning his second set, but ultimately was overcome by Washington’s Jeff Hawke, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
In the Round of 16, Soto put up a good fight against Cristobal Rivera of Loyola Marymount, but came up short, 6-4, 6-3. Aly met the same fate as his teammate, falling to David Doehrig also from Loyola Marymount, 6-1, 6-3. No. 5 Gonzalez was unable to defeat his opponent, SMU’s Misha Nowicki, falling 6-4, 6-2.
