GREENSBORO, N.C. – Shakima Wimbley was named the ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week for the fourth time in 2017, the conference office announced Tuesday.
After winning three weekly awards during indoor season, Wimbley picked up her first ACC Performer of the Week honor of the 2017 outdoor season after an outstanding performance on Senior Day.
The senior won the women's 200m at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational with a time of 22.67 seconds that ranks third in the world this season. The standout sprinter wowed the crowd at Cobb Stadium in her final home meet as a Hurricane, posting an ACC-leading time that ranks fourth in the NCAA and second in the East region.
Wimbley was joined by fellow senior Aiyanna Stiverne, junior Kristina Knott and sophomore Anna Runia on Miami’s winning 4x100m relay, posting a time of 44.17 seconds that is the 14th-fastest time run by any NCAA relay team this year.
“I am extremely pleased with how Shakima handled her first 200 meters in the outdoor season,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “I thought it was a big run, especially considering the emotions of Senior Day and having her family here. It was a very emotional day being her last home meet as a Hurricane and being from South Florida. To see her open up at 22.6 and her personal best is 22.43, it was a great opening run for her. I think she is right where she needs to be and if she stays on the plan, then I think we are going to see a lot more great runs from her in the 200 and 400 meters.”
The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native was also named ACC Women’s Track Performer of the week on January 17, January 24 and February 14. Wimbley is currently the ACC leader in the 200m and 400m, as well as on Miami’s ACC-leading 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
The Canes will travel to Waco, Texas, to compete at the Michael Johnson Invitational on April 22. To view the complete Miami track and field schedule for the 2017 season, click here.
