CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami head women's basketball coach Katie Meier released Thursday the team's non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2017-18 season.
The Hurricanes are set to play 13 regular season contests before ACC play begins. Miami opens the regular season on Nov. 10 against FIU as part of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team at the Watsco Center.
Kentucky, Maryland and St. John's are among the teams set to come to Coral Gables, while Miami will leave the continental United States for a game for the first time since 2011.
“Once again, we are really challenging ourselves with our non-conference schedule,” Meier said. “We know how hard the ACC will be, but are excited to take on Pac-12, BIG EAST, SEC and Big Ten teams, as well as other programs that traditionally compete for conference titles.”
Following an exhibition contest on Oct. 31 and the game versus FIU, the Hurricanes welcome Vermont to the Watsco Center on Nov. 12.
On Nov. 18, Miami will travel to take on Colorado in Boulder, Colo. The Buffaloes, a member of the Pac-12, are coming off a WNIT Round of 16 appearance in 2016-17.
Following its trip to the Centennial State, Miami will host New Orleans on Nov. 21. After that, Maryland, Maine and Kennesaw State visit Coral Gables for the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament, held Nov. 24 and 26.
The Hurricanes open the tournament with the Black Bears and then will face either the Owls or the Terrapins, who are coming off a 32-3 season, Big Ten Tournament title and NCAA Sweet 16 berth.
Miami is then set to host a pair of teams that eclipsed 20 wins last season, facing a strong BIG EAST opponent, St. John's, on Dec. 3 and a perennial SEC powerhouse, Kentucky, on Dec. 10. The Red Storm reached the WNIT Round of 16 last season, while the Wildcats made the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
“We have a lot of players who will be taking on new roles for us, along with five freshmen,” Meier said. “It was imperative for us to put together a schedule that will expose us to different styles of play, while revealing our strengths and weaknesses prior to ACC competition.”
Following their contests against St. John's and Kentucky, the Hurricanes conclude their homestand by taking on Alabama State on Dec. 15.
After that, they trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for a pair of games in the Puerto Rico Classic. Miami meets Sacramento State on Dec. 19 and then plays Western Michigan the following day.
“We are excited to give our players a chance to compete in the unique environment that Puerto Rico offers,” Meier said. “The trip includes a pair of quality games and will be a special trip for the team.”
Miami then heads home to wrap up its non-conference portion of the season by hosting Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 28. The Wildcats surpassed 20 victories in 2016-17 and made the WNIT.
In addition to these 12 games, the Hurricanes will also participate in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The official announcement of Miami's opponent and game date have yet to be announced.
