CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The University of Miami women's basketball team never trailed in its first round game of their UM Holiday Tournament, easily dispatching Central Connecticut State, 64-43, Friday night at the BankUnited Center.
Leading their conference with a defense that allows its opponents to shoot just 31 percent from the field, the Hurricanes (9-2) limited the visiting Blue Devils (5-5) to just a 25.5 shooting percentage.
The UM defense also forced its opponents into 31 turnovers, converting them into 32 points.
For the second consecutive game, Stefanie Yderstrom led the Canes in scoring, pouring in 18 on the night. Shawnice "Pepper" Wilson added 12 points and seven rebounds in the winning effort.
Freshman forward Keyona Hayes came off the bench and had a huge game, scoring 11 points and grabbing a season-best 15 rebounds to go with a pair of steals. The double-double ties the Marietta, Ga., native with Wilson for a team-leading third of the season.
Another freshman, Macy Keen made her presence felt on the defensive end, swatting away three shots for the second straight game. Sophomore Michelle Woods led the Hurricanes with four assists and four steals on the evening.
Yderstrom scored seven of Miami's first 11 points, in a half that was never really close. The Canes built a 39-17 heading into the locker room.
Jaclyn babe led the Blue Devils with 13 points, while Lauren Arbogast added 11. Jaleen Thomas picked up 10 rebounds while point guard Jessica Babe led all player with five assists.
Miami will face Wisconsin in the tournament final at 7:05 p.m. It will be the first matchup between the two programs. The Badgers easily defeated Delaware State, 83-54, in Friday's first contest. The Hornets will face Connecticut State in the consolation game at 5 p.m.
