The $1,000,000 Athletic Scholarship Endowment: A Lasting Legacy Endowments guarantee a perpetual source of financial support for athletic scholarships, allowing funds from the Athletic Department to meet other essential needs that are critical to the success of our department. In the face of escalating scholarship costs an Athletic Scholarship Endowment is the ideal way to make a lasting impact on our student-athletes while assisting us in achieving departmental excellence. More importantly, you will be creating a lasting bond, with the university and student-athletes' whose lives will be forever changed by your generosity. A fully funded $1,000,000 endowment is created through the establishment of a permanent fund that is invested and managed by the University's Office of the Treasurer. A portion of the annual interest income generated is used to carry out the donor's designated purpose. Income earned in excess of the annual amount spent is added back in to the endowment to grow and maintain its purchasing power for future generations. Estate and Gift Planning is an excellent way to accomplish both personal and charitable goals. It is a process that combines financial planning, estate planning and tax planning techniques to help you make significant gifts, often with dramatic tax and financial rewards. Depending on the option you choose, you can reduce your income taxes; avoid capital-gain tax; increase your spendable income; retain payments for life; and achieve no-cost, no-worry asset management. Collaborating with the University's Office of Estate and Planned Giving, we offer a full range of planned giving services. We are here to help you select the best gift plan to meet your specific needs and circumstances. Leaving a legacy has never been so easy! What is Estate and Gift Planning? Estate and gift planning helps you maximize the personal benefits of your charitable giving, and allows you to make gifts you may have thought impossible. Through advantageous tax treatment under both state and federal law, planned giving is a way to make a gift and also enjoy the benefits of these laws. Planned Giving Vehicles: There are many different types of planned giving vehicles depending on the individual's needs and circumstances. Vehicles include:
Gifts of Assets:
Gifts By Will Bequests, which are gifts made through a will or trust, have been extremely important to the University of Miami since its founding, providing continuing support of its important mission. Bequests are a commonly used planned giving vehicle because they allow donors to meet their commitments during their lifetime while leaving a legacy upon their passing. Charitable bequests can also convey tax benefits to a donor's estate. Gifts that Pay you Income: The University offers a variety of life-income arrangements. A life-income arrangement operates generally as follows: you irrevocably contribute cash; appreciated securities or other property to the University, which then sells and reinvests the property to pay an annual income to you and/or a beneficiary for life or a term of years. After the death of the last beneficiary or the end of the term, your gift is then transferred to the University of Miami. The proceeds of your gift are used for the purposes you designate at the time of your contribution. Benefits of a life-income gift include annual income for you and/or a beneficiary; professional investment management at no charge: bypassing capital gains on gifts of appreciated assets; immediate federal income tax charitable deduction; and estate tax savings.
Determining the right plan for you depends on a number of factors including your age, type of assets, income needs, and financial objectives. There are a number of life-income plans including the following:
