Maryam Jawid Named ACC Freshman of the Week

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami’s Maryam Jawid was named ACC Women’s Cross Country Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.

The Chicago native earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors after an impressive performance at the 2017 Mountain Dew Invitational at the University of Florida. Jawid was seventh in the women’s 5K with a personal-best time of 18:00.4 that ranks sixth in UM history.

“I’m happy for Maryam,” Miami distance coach Damon Griffiths said. “She has been getting better each week and I look forward to watching her continue to improve as the season progresses.”

Jawid has been outstanding in her inaugural season as a Hurricane, leading the women’s team in each of their first two races in 2017. She began her Miami career with a strong performance, as she placed second overall in the women’s 5K at the FAU Invitational with a time of 18:07.

The Hurricanes will travel to Kentucky for the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday. The race will give Miami the opportunity to race on the course that will host the ACC Cross Country Championships on Oct. 27 and the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 18.
